Cataracts Symptoms and Treatment

What is Cataract and Its Causes?

A cataract is known as the clouding of the eye’s lenses which therefore leads to impairment in the visual acuity. Protein build up in the lens of the eyes is the main cause why clouding is present. when this happens, the vision is impaired by preventing light from passing through the lens. There are also other causes which contribute to its occurrence including the following:

  • Congenital
  • Advancing age
  • Trauma or injury to the eye
  • Medical conditions such as in the case of diabetic retinopathy
  • Use of certain drugs
  • Exposure to toxins
  • Cigarette smoking
  • Alcohol consumption

Cataract Symptoms

There are instances when cataracts do not display any symptoms unless the condition has progressed. Generally though, some of the symptoms which manifest are:

  • Blurry, cloudy, foggy vision
  • Double vision
  • Nearsightedness
  • Headache due to sudden changes in prescription glasses
  • Glaring
  • Impaired night vision

When such symptoms are seen, it is required that you seek the help of an optometrist for a correct diagnosis of the problem. Eye exams and tests via the use of an ophthalmoscope are needed to see how worse the eyesight has become.

How to Treat Cataracts

Cataract treatment is dependent on the severity of the condition. But it is important to be given proper attention since this can lead to vision loss as well as secondary problems like performing activities of daily living. How to cure cataract can be done through:

  • Surgery – phacoemulsificatin is the name for the operation done to remove the clouding of the lens. It will be replaced with silicone of plastic. This is done as an outpatient operation and is under local anesthesia.
  • Prescription glasses or contact lenses – although this may improve your eyesight, the root problem isn’t totally treated.
  • There isn’t any specific medication treatment to get rid of the clouding nor there are any home remedies to help with cataracts. Other treatment may include treating secondary condition such as in the case of diabetes and management of blood sugar levels.

Unfortunately, there isn’t any way on how to prevent the problem since this develops as a result of ageing process. However, lifestyle modifications such as smoking cessation and keeping your blood sugar level in a normal level will surely help. Good luck!
