Based on statistics, the incidence of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) including AIDS/ HIV, chlamydia, genital herpes, trichomoniasis, genital warts, and gonorrhea continue to rise. But one STD that’s becoming so rampant is Syphilis which is caused by the bacterium Treponema pallidum. It happens to all sexes, but it is more common in women than in men. At times, the disease can be hard to diagnose since it mimics symptoms of other diseases. Learn more as we give you details on its symptoms, transmission, and how to cure syphilis.

How is It Transmitted?

The disease can be passed on from one person to another via direct contact through sexual and oral intercourse. It is characterized with sores which can be seen on the outer area of the genitals, vagina, and anus. Oftentimes, sores may also be present in the mouth and lips. In addition, pregnant women can pass the infection to their babies during pregnancy.

Symptoms of Syphilis

Symptoms vary depending on the stage of the condition. But during the early stages, some of the symptoms that may manifest include:

  • One or more painless sores or ulcers (better known as chancres)
  • The sores may be seen outside the vagina or penis, anus, and mouth.

This may progress to the secondary stage where symptoms such as the following maybe seen:

  • Flu-like symptoms
  • Fatigue
  • Swollen lymph nodes
  • Loss of appetite
  • Non- itchy rashes in the body
  • Cluster of warts in the genital area
  • White patches on the mouth and tongue area

If you believe that you are faced with the situation, then it is important that prompt medical attention immediately. Your doctor will then perform blood tests and many other to help diagnose your symptoms.

Syphilis Treatment

The method on how to treat it includes antibiotic therapy which is given either orally or intramuscularly. Penicillin is the drug of choice and it is given for two weeks. Since antibiotics are contraindicated to pregnant women, patients who are pregnant should inform their physician in order to be provided with an alternative drug helpful for the condition.

Although there aren’t specific home remedies to help you with the problem, a couple of prevention tips such as avoiding vaginal or oral sex while undergoing treatment and using latex condoms can help a lot on how to get rid or avoid transmission of the condition.

Finally, it is also important that you comply to the treatment plan religiously and make sure that you get a check-up on a regular basis until your doctor says that you’re cured. Stay healthy!
