How to Prevent Gout Attacks

Gout is a form of systemic disease which results when there is an excessive deposit of the waste product uric acid in the joints and tissues thus leaving higher level of uric acid in the blood. The condition is another form of arthritis alongside rheumatoid arthritis. Gout is extremely painful and leads to manifestations of signs and symptoms like the following.

  • Swelling and stiffness of the joints
  • Redness
  • Foot and heel pain or any joint pain
  • Heat

The most common site of affectation for gout is the big toe. The joints in the big toe are usually affected and are often mistaken for bunion. But other parts of the body may be affected as well including the fingers, elbows, wrists, knees, ankles, and heels.

Causes of Gouty Arthritis

Statistics says that atleast 20 percent of the cases why the condition happens is due to familial predisposition. Other attributed causes include men who are 30 years old and older, overweight individual, postmenopausal women, people suffering from high blood pressure, and lifestyle.

Although the problem may be hard to deal with, individuals are still lucky enough since this can be highly controlled. Having said this, let’s take a look at some tips on how to prevent gout attacks.

Prevention of Gout Attacks

  • Avoid any alcoholic drinks since it increases the level of uric acid in the blood. But if you must drink, remember to keep in moderation to prevent attacks.
  • Drink plenty of clear fluids especially water as it helps flush out the toxins from the body.
  • Diet plays a vital role on how to treat and prevent attacks. Therefore, modify diet by cutting down intake of high purine foods such as anchovies, sardines, liver, mushrooms, scallops, and a lot more. Opt for healthy foods such as strawberries, blueberries, celery, Vitamin C rich foods, low-fat dairy products, and many others.
  • Make sure that you exercise on a regular basis in order to lose weight.  Plan routines that are not strenuous to the joints to avoid inducing further damage on them.
  • Ask your doctor about the medication treatment that you are taking as it may raise the level of your uric acid.
  • Consult your doctor on a regular basis to further evaluate the diagnosis and plan other treatment on how to cure gout attacks.

The tips mentioned above are quite simple, but once the measures are taken to heart, they will definitely help on how to prevent gout attacks. Stay healthy!
